Teen Falls Off Jet Ski On East Lake Okoboji; Turns Up Safely Later

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Some tense moments this (Sat.) morning on East Lake Okoboji.

Gary Owen of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Lakes Patrol tells KUOO news they received a report of a missing boy who had fallen off a personal watercraft he was riding. Owen says the driver wasn’t immediately aware the boy had fallen off.

Thankfully the teen, who’s from outside the area, was wearing a wet suit and personal floatation device. He wasn’t injured and walked back to the residence he was staying. A search organized by D-N-R officials and the Okoboji Underwater Search and Rescue Crew was then called off.

Owen says the incident took place around 9:00 a.m. about 400 yards from shore near Camp Foster.

Owen says it points out the importance of always wearing a personal floatation device whenever you’re on the water.
