Propane Explosion Results In Evacuation Of Battle Creek

November 23, 2014

(Battle Creek)– Things are getting back to normal in Battle Creek.

The Ida county town was evacuated after an explosion early Thursday afternoon rocked a propane business.

The blast took place shortly after 1:00 p.m. at Johnson Propane. It set off a fire that threatened two nearby tanks of propane. The town was evacuated as a precaution. Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from reaching those tanks, and residents were allowed to return late Thursday afternoon.

Authorities say the cause of the explosion, which took place in a small room where tanks are filled, is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.

A man who was working in the area of the blast, 18-year-old Darrel “Ben” Bobzien was the only person injured. He’s listed in stable condition at a Sioux City hospital.
