Spirit Lake Man Sentenced In Kidnapping Case

(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake man who pleaded guilty in a kidnapping case has been sentenced.

Wade LeRoy Gardner was charged for holding a Spirit Lake woman against her will in his basement in July of last year.

Gardner pleaded guilty previously to charges of kidnapping in the third degree, willful injury and assault with a dangerous weapon. A charge of assault while participating in a felony was dismissed as part of a plea bargain.

On the kidnapping charge, Gardner was sentenced to a prison term not to exceed 10 years; on the willful injury charge, he was sentenced to a term not to exceed five years in prison; and on the assault with a dangerous weapon charge, Gardner was sentenced to no more than two years in prison. The sentences are to be served concurrently with credit for time already served.

Gardner was also ordered to make restitution to the state, the Crime Victim Assistance Program and Dickinson County Community Services. He was also ordered to have no contact with the victim, Debra McDonald, or her family.
