Drier Fire Results In Smoke Damage To Spirit Lake High School

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake Fire Department was called to a report of a fire this (Tuesday) evening at Spirit Lake High School.

Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says a clothes dryer in a laundry room on the north side of the building overheated and caught on fire…starting its contents on fire. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, but not before a considerable amount of smoke had spread throughout the building.

Superintendent Dr. Tim Grieves says a couple of teachers and custodians were in the building when the fire broke out. They got out when fire alarms started going off. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters ventilated the entire building and most of the smoke had dissipated within an hour or so.

Grieves says there WILL be classes as usual Wednesday.

The State Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate just what it was that caused the dryer to overheat.

The Spirit Lake Fire Department was called to the scene shortly after 8:30 p.m. Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour and-a-half.
