Spirit Lake Cracks Down On Placement Of Political Signs

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– If you have a campaign sign in your yard and live in Spirit Lake, listen up. City officials say any signs that are located on public right-of-way will either be moved or confiscated.

Public Works Director Todd Dolphin says city code prohibits the placement of any advertising signs, including political ones, on public rights-of-way…including state highways. Dolphin says the city will give candidates and property owners until the middle of next week to move the signs. After that, the city will relocate or confiscate any signs that are still on right-of-way.

Dolphin says the right-of-way generally is defined as that area between the curb and sidewalk. Or in those areas with no sidewalk, 10 feet out from the curb.

Dolphin says the city has been getting complaints over signs showing up where they aren’t supposed to be. Dolphin says candidates should have checked with the city before putting out the signs.
