(Arnolds Park)– Planning is well underway for this year’s University of Okoboji Winter Games.
60-degree temperatures resulted in last year’s events being moved out of Smith’s Bay for the first time ever. Chairman Jeff Smith is hoping they won’t have to do that again this year. As of right now, he says they’re planning to move them back to Smith’s Bay this year. There will be one exception, though. The “burning of the greens” and opening extravaganza will be held on the green space just east of the Arnolds Park Amusement Park. Safety reasons are sited for the decision.
Atleast one new event is being planned this year: a cribbage tournament at Pelican Ridge.
Smith says they’re already seeing an increased interest in the winter games as inquiries are already pouring in…especially for broomball, an activity that’s been associated with the winter games since they got their start.
Nomination forms for winter games cheerleaders will be available later in November.
This year’s winter games will be held January 24th through the 26th. The next organizational meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. November 18th at the Okoboji Spirit Center in Arnolds Park.
