ICN Meetings On Judicial Re-Districting To Be Shown Locally

November 23, 2014

(Des Moines)– An advisory committee drawing new judicial districts in Iowa has scheduled a series of public meetings that will be shown this month on the Iowa Communications Network. They’ll be downloaded to 16 sites November 11th, 12th and 14th from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. each evening. Locally, the program will be available at the I-C-N room of the Okoboji High School in Milford Thursday, November 14th.

David Oman, a Des Moines businessman, co-chairs the 25-member citizens committee that’s developing the judicial re-districting proposals. He says the group has nothing to do with closing courthouses or consolidating court services…saying those issues are outside the committee’s scope. Oman says they’re studying only the number and boundaries of judicial districts and judicial election districts.

The committee plans to submit its report to the Iowa Supreme Court in December, which will consider whether or not to recommend a plan for new districts to the general assembly. Only the legislature has the authority to change the number and boundaries of judicial and election districts.

The public will be able to give input and ask questions during the I-C-N programs.
