Land Near Milford Identified As Possible Compost Site

November 23, 2014

(Milford)– Some lakes area cities looking for a compost site think they’ve found one.

Arnolds Park City Administrator Ron Walker says they’ve identified 10 acres on the north side of a 40 acre site next Calvary Cemetary west of Milford. The county-owned land is near a gravel pit and is currently being leased. But Walker says that lease is about to expire and he says the cities will approach the county to see if it would be interested in starting up a compost operation on the site.

Officials say operating and maintaining the site shouldn’t cost that much. Most of the initial expense would be on fencing off the site and securing it with a small ongoing expense to pay someone to supervise it on a part-time basis.

Several lakes area cities have had their leaf and tree limb dump sites closed by the D-N-R. The agency wants the cities to adopt composting programs instead.
