DNR Urges Extreme Caution As Lakes Freeze

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The recent cold temperatures have many of the Iowa Great Lakes sporting a thin coating of ice.

Gary Owen of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says anyone thinking about venturing out onto the ice needs to think twice. He says atleast two inches of good ice is needed for walking; atleast six inches is needed for snowmobiles or A-T-V’s, and atleast a foot is needed to drive an automobile onto it.

While most of the Iowa Great Lakes are frozen, most of West Lake Okoboji was still ice free as of this (Tuesday) morning…with the only ice being in the bays.
