(Spirit Lake)– A house in Spirit Lake was gutted by fire Sunday evening.
The Spirit Lake Fire Department was called to 2203 Gary Avenue around 7:00 p.m. Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says the small house, being rented by Cory Morrow, sustained considerable fire, smoke and water damage.
Morrow wasn’t home at the time and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the explosion and fire wasn’t immediately known. Jorgenson believes the explosion occurred on the north side of the house. An investigator from the State Fire Marshall’s Office was on the scene Sunday night and is to return today (Mon.).
The fire was discovered by neighbors who heard numerous loud “popping” noises and small explosions coming from the house. Jorgenson says there were numerous rounds of live ammunition in the house which discharged in the heat of the fire.
The house is one of four in a complex on that block owned by Dan Wingert of Spirit Lake.
