(Spirit Lake)– Still no word on Dickinson county’s appeal of a permit the Iowa Department of Natural Resources granted for a four thousand head hog lot being proposed in the Horseshoe Bend area.
The D-N-R granted the permit to Dutch Creek Farms of Fairmont, Minnesota. Nothing was said about it until neighbors noticed construction going on in September. The board of supervisors voted to contest the permit, only after the D-N-R reopened the public comment period on the application because the supervisors didn’t say anything when the agency notified them in April that a permit had been applied for.
The supervisors voted three-to-nothing November 12th to recommend the D-N-R’s Environmental Protection Division revoke the previously issued permit. A letter to that affect was drafted and sent to the agency the next day. But there’s still been no response.
A court hearing on a permanent injunction against the feedlot has been delayed several times. It’s now scheduled for January 21st in Dickinson county district court.
