YMCA Backers Issue Plea For Donations

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Now that it’s been shut out of any Vision Iowa funding, the YMCA of the Okoboji’s Capital Campaign is putting out another call for the public to contribute.

To date, the campaign has raised four-point-one million dollars to build a YMCA just south of Spirit Lake. An additional two-point-one million is needed.

Brian Petersen of Camp Foster YMCA says his board of directors was notified this week that Vision Iowa has awarded all of its funding, and that they weren’t awarding any more money to projects in Clay, Dickinson or Emmet counties.

Petersen says they’ll be starting the final phase of the fundraising campaign in upcoming weeks.

The proposed facility is to include a swimming pool, gymnasium, aerobics room, a walking/running track and a separate youth and teen center.

Plans still call for construction to start this spring.
