Firefighters Battle Cornstalk/Ditch Blaze

November 23, 2014

(Milford)– Milford firefighters spent several hours early this morning battling a corn stalk/ditch fire.

Fire Chief Don Eckard says the Milford Fire Department was called to 210th Avenue and 240th Street around 1:00 a.m. Eckard says some 30 to 40 large round corn stalk bales and a ditch were on fire. He says some nearby buildings were threatened at one point, but firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading.

The fire was on land owned by Jack Johnson of rural Milford. Eckard says Johnson assisted firefighters by using a tractor loader to move bales and break them apart so firefighters could soak them down.

Other than being real cold, Eckard says no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire isn’t certain. Eckard thinks it may have started in the ditch.

Milford firefighters were on the scene until about 4:00 a.m.
