Cattle Killed In Highway 86 Rollover

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A semi rollover on Highway 86 at the Iowa/Minnesota border caused quite a mess today (Thursday).

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says 25-year-old Joe Bolton of Dallas, South Dakota was southbound when he lost control of a semi pulling a transport loaded with 80 head of cattle weighing about 650 pounds each. The 1996 Freightliner semi tractor and the 2002 Wilson livestock trailer it was pulling went into the ditch and rolled onto its side. 10 of the cattle were killed; others had varying degrees of injuries. The still healthy cattle were loaded onto another truck.

The tractor and trailer were totaled.

No injuries were reported to Bolton.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the Lake Park Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol.

The mishap took place around 9:00 a.m. Crews were on the scene until about 3:30 p.m. cleaning up the mess and re-loading the cattle.
