(Spirit Lake)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are again warning everyong to stay off the main parts of the Iowa Great Lakes.
D-N-R enforcement officer Gary Owen says a pickup fell through Wednesday morning just off Red Nose Point on the east side of Big Spirit Lake. No injuries were reported.
Owen says the ice in that area was about 10 inches thick Tuesday, but had eroded to just a couple of inches by Wednesday. It’s about 80 yards away from a hole of open water.
Owen says wave action caused by the open holes is undermining the ice, making it thin and very dangerous.
