SL Council Purchases Roll-Off Truck; Adopts New Program for Brown/White Good Disposal

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Some big changes are in store for Spirit Lake residents looking to get rid of white goods, brown goods and other types of old appliances.

Meeting in special session today (Tues.), the city council adopted a system through which residents will be required to purchase tags to get rid of such items. City Administrator Pete Hegeman says the city will charge the same as what the landfill does to dispose of the items. For instance, tags to dispose of household appliances will cost 25-dollars; tags to get rid of appliances containing freon gas or capacitors will cost 30-dollars; and tags for brown goods, such as televisions, computers, monitors, and so on will cost 10-dollars. Residents will be able to dispose of those items year-round by setting them out with the proper sticker on them. Hegeman says the new program will be up and running as soon as the stickers arrive.

The council also voted today (Tues.) to purchase a 1994 Ford truck with a roll-off body at a cost of 39,900-dollars. Hegeman says the move will enable the city to empty the recycling roll-offs at the Public Works Building. The city currently contracts with Shamrock Recycling, which hauls the items to Horizon’s Unlimited in Emmetsburg. Hegeman says once the city takes over the operation, the items will be hauled to H & H Recycling in Spirit Lake…saving the city about 28-thousand dollars a year in pick up and handling fees. The city attorney was directed to write up an agreement with H & H.

Hegeman adds having the truck will also allow the city to pick up solid waste roll-off containers several businesses in the city have.
