(Spirit Lake)– Charges have been filed against three people in connection with an incident early this (Friday) morning in Spirit Lake.
Police Chief Jon Martyr says officers were called to a report of an assault around 12:24 a.m. in the 900 block of 12th Street. Upon arriving, officers learned two suspects had unlawfully entered the victim’s residence. Once inside, Martyr says the two apparently became violent and allegedly assaulted two of the four residents.
Through an investigation, authorities identified the suspects as 39-year-old John Kempema and 35-year-old Patrice Renee Herke…both of Spirit Lake. Martyr says officers found the two at a nearby residence at 1116 Jackson Avenue. As officers were questioning Kempema and Herke at that address they allegedly observed several items of drug paraphernalia.
Kempema was charged with first degree burglary, aggravated assault, public intoxication and possession of drug paraphernalia. Herke was charged with first degree burglary, simple assault, public intoxication and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A third suspect, 52-year-old David Allen Freligh of Spirit Lake, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
All three were booked into the Dickinson county jail.
