SMU Signs Agreement To Assist With Telephone Project In Algona

November 23, 2014

(Algona)– Two northern Iowa municipal utilities have signed an agreement to work together to provide telephone service in Algona.

Spencer Municipal Utilities will provide switching services for Algona Municipal Utilities once AMU begins offering telephone service later this year.

SMU General Manager Leon Rodas says it’s a great example of two publicly-owned entities sharing resources for the benefit of both communities.

Although SMU will provide AMU with wholesale switching services, the relationship with the Algona telephone customer will remain local.

Algona Utilities is completing construction of its municipal communications utility, and expects to begin deploying telephone service this summer.

SMU began offering telephone service in 2001 and currently serves about half of Spencer’s homes and businesses.
