(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake school board is still looking into the possibility of tightening eligibility guidelines for athletics and other activities.
The board met earlier this week with Jim Billings of Spirit Lake, who’s a member of the Iowa State Board of Education. That board voted down a proposal last year that would have resulted in tougher eligibility guidelines statewide. Billings feels strongly such a decision should be left to local officials. But he says the issue will still come back to state board…probably sometime this coming fall.
It seemed to be the concensus of the Spirit Lake school board Monday that tighter requirements are needed locally. But several said requiring students to have atleast a two-point-oh grade point average might be a bit harsh. They directed Superintendent Tim Grieves to come up with a recommendation that would represent somewhat of a middle ground.
They’ll consider it at their April meeting.
