Date Set For Vote On Proposal To Extend Dickinson County LOSST

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county voters will head to the polls in June to decide whether or not to extend the county’s local option sales tax for schools an additional 10 years.

The board of supervisors Tuesday adopted a resolution setting Tuesday, June 17th as the date for the special election.

Three Dickinson county school boards have adopted resolutions calling for the vote. Spirit Lake and Harris-Lake Park were the first to take the action, followed by Okoboji.

A proposal in the legislature would make the tax statewide. The local schools say they would get much less with a statewide tax than what they get locally. A provision in the bill requires schools looking to extend their existing sales tax to get a special election scheduled before April 1st. The election itself can be held after that.

The existing tax in Dickinson county sunsets in 2010. If the voters approve June 17th, it would be extended to 2020.
