Spirit Lake Crash Claims Life Of An Estherville Man

(Spirit Lake)– A two-vehicle accident Sunday on the east edge of Spirit Lake has claimed the life of an Estherville man.

The victim is identified as 59-year-old Marvin Mitchell of Estherville.

Police say an eastbound 1998 Dodge pickup driven by 38-year-old Suzanne Gardner of Spirit Lake crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 1991 Chevrolet S-10 pick-up Mitchell was driving.

42-year-old Doris Mitchell, a passenger in the vehicle Marvin Mitchell was driving, along with Gardner and a passenger in her vehicle, four-year-old Jacob Gardner, were taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare. Doris Mitchell was transferred by Life Flight Helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota. The injuries sustained by Suzanne Gardner and Jacob Gardner were believed to be minor.

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash, that took place around 2:20 p.m. on Highways nine and 71 just east of the intersection with Pioneer Beach Road.

The Spirit Lake Police Department was assisted by the Arnolds Park Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Spirit Lake Fire Department and the Milford Extrication Unit.
