Okoboji Subdivision Defeated In Tie Vote

November 23, 2014

(Okoboji)– Plans for a new subdivision were dealt a setback at Tuesday’s Okoboji City Council meeting.

With one member absent, a motion to approve a Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation to grant the final plat of the Hammerstrom Shores Subdivision died on a two to two tie vote.

The proposed subdivision includes three lots behind the old Okoboji city hall.

Mike Hoepner owns some lots adjacent to the proposed subdivision. He says he was granted an easement to the lots years ago when the city vacated a street in that area. Hoepner is concerned he’d lose that easement if the subdivision is allowed. But City Attorney Mike Chosen recommended the council approve the subdivision, saying it complied with the city’s zoning ordinance.

Following the vote, council person Sharlene Eckard said she hopes the parties involved in the dispute can negotiate some kind of a resolution.
