Okoboji Council Approves Plat On A Second Go-Round

November 23, 2014

(Okoboji)– The second time was the charm for getting a plat approved for a subdivision in Okoboji.

Meeting in special session, the Okoboji city council Monday voted five to nothing to approve the plat for the Hammerstrom Shores Subdivision to be located behind the former city hall. A motion to approve the same plat failed earlier this month on a two-two tie vote with one member absent. The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission had recommended approval.

The plat drew opposition from Mike Hoepner, a neighboring property owner. He says approval of the plat will result in the loss of some property that was conveyed to him by the city when it vacated an alley in October of 1992.

But City Attorney Mike Chosen again told council members Monday the plat complies with the city’s zoning ordinance. He added the issue is a civil one between Hoepner and the developer, Vern Hammerstrom.

John Martin, an attorney representing Hoepner, indicated they probably will go to court.

After more discussion, the council voted five-to-nothing to approve the plat.
