Arnolds Park Traffic Stop Results In Drug Arrests

November 23, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– A traffic stop Thursday in Arnolds Park has resulted in drug charges against two people.

Arnolds Park police say they pulled over a pickup on Highway 71 shortly after 1:00 p.m. The driver, 35-year-old Elizabeth McWilliams of Spirit Lake, was found to be driving without a valid driver’s license. A passenger in the vehicle, 31-year-old James Handsaker of Milford, was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear on past drug charges, with a bond of 25-thousand dollars.

Authorities say a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of precursors used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine along with some drug paraphernalia. A search warrant was then obtained and executed on McWilliams’ residence in Spirit Lake, which turned up more drug paraphernalia.

McWilliams was charged with driving under suspension; possession of a precursor to manufacture methamphetamine-pseudoephedrine; possession of a precursor to manufacture methamphetamine-lithium batteries; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The last three charges were also filed against Handsaker.

Officials say an investigation continues and more arrests are expected.

The Arnolds Park and Spirit Lake Police Department’s canine units assisted in the search. The Okoboji Police Department also helped out.
