Milford Council Considers Proposed Change To Zoning Ordinance

November 23, 2014

(Milford)– The Milford city council Monday held the first reading of a proposed ordinance that would allow gravel mining in an area zoned agricultural.

The city received the request from Dave Smith, who wants to re-open an abandoned gravel pit on county road A-34. Smith told the council he wants to level out some cliffs in the pit and to mine some left over gravel.

Under the proposal, Smith would be required to obtain a conditional use permit that would prohibit crushing or other processing operations. Mining operations would be limited to between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. with no work to be done on weekends or legal holidays; dust and noise control would have to be addressed; the permit would be in effect for six months; and a performance bond would be required to cover reclamation costs.

With two members absent, the council voted three to nothing to approve the first reading of the proposed ordinance.
