(Spirit Lake)– A broken natural gas line caused a few tense moments late this (Thursday) morning in the harbor area of West Lake Okoboji.
Dickinson County Sheriff Greg Baloun says authorities were called to 15626 Fuhrman Road around 11:15 a.m. after getting a report that a natural gas line had been broken. Baloun says a worker was digging a hole with a tree spade to plant a tree when he accidentally struck a service line, breaking it off. The worker used a pair of vice grips to crimp it off, limiting the amount of gas escaping from the line. Baloun says the gas company was able to get the gas shut off and repaired the line without incident.
The Spirit Lake Fire Department stood by as a precaution.
Baloun says authorities went door-to-door advising neighbors of the situation, but he says there was no evacuation.
Officials were on the scene about 20 minutes.
