(Okoboji)– The University of Okoboji Foundation announced today (Thurs.) it’s awarded 39-thousand dollars in grants to seven lakes area charities.
Three thousand dollars was awarded to the Dickinson County Crisis Center to assist in remodeling the Child Advocate area in the shelter; the Dickinson County Historical Society and Museum was awarded five thousand dollars to assist with the purchase of a computer and fire-proof file for its archives; seven thousand dollars was awarded to the Humane Society of Northwest Iowa to purchase a chain link fence for an outdoor exercise area; the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association will get four thousand to assist in its museum project; five thousand goes to the Lakes Area Hockey Association to assist in the installation of dasher boards and glass for a new rink; the Okoboji Summer Theatre was awarded 10-thousand dollars to assist with an interior restoration project; and the Gardner Cabin and State Historical Society were awarded five thousand dollars to assist with the restoration of fencing around the monument and gravesite.
The foundation last year voted to give 75-thousand dollars toward the construction of the new YMCA. Combined with the 39-thousand in grants that were awarded today (Thurs.), the gifts for 2003 totals 114-thousand dollars.
Since its founding 14 years ago, the foundation has awarded slightly more than 1.1 million dollars in gifts.
According to Smith Schuneman, Foundation President, the foundation’s endowment is now more than two million dollars.
