Four Vehicle Accident Injures Five People

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Spirit Lake police say five people were injured in a four-vehicle accident Wednesday on Highways nine and 71 in front of Pure Fishing.

Police say 21-year-old Justin Spieker of Spencer was driving a 1994 Ford pickup owned by Clay Regional Water eastbound when he crossed the center line and sideswiped a westbound Rochester City Lines tour bus driven by Daniel Schottler of Oronoco, Minnesota. The pickup then collided with a 1991 Dodge Spirit driven by 37-year-old Judith Siemers of Lake Park. The pickup continued on, colliding with a 1999 Toyota driven by 21-year-old Sara Weideman of Council Bluffs.

Weideman and two passengers in the vehicle she was driving, 19-year-old Emily Vacco of Oyster Bay, New York and 22-year-old Brian Roeder of Grinnell, along with Spieker and Siemers, were taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare. All were treated and released.

No injuries were reported to Schottler or any of the bus passengers who were cheerleaders attending a camp in Spirit Lake.

Police say the two cars and the pickup were totaled; the tour bus sustained an estimated three thousand to four thousand dollars worth of damage.

Spieker was charged with driving on the right side of the roadway.
