(Arnolds Park)– The Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Department spent part of the Labor Day holiday putting out grass fires.
Chief Steve Dulin says they had two calls Monday. He says the first one came in around 2:00 p.m. when they were called to the Norvin Johnson farm east of Arnolds Park. Dulin says a pile of lumber and some junk went up in smoke. He says they were able to keep the blaze from spreading to a nearby house and corn field. Dulin says they initially believed the fire was the result of a controlled burn. But he says the property owner told them they had NOT been burning.
Dulin says the next call came in around 3:30 p.m. He says someone who had been camping illegally at the boat ramp across from Trigg’s Resort had dumped out some hot goals, starting a grassy area on fire. Dulin says they were able to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby parking area filled with vehicles and boat trailers.
No injuries were reported in Monday’s fires.
Dulin urges everyone to be extremely careful with fire as the drought continues. No rain is in the forecast through early next week.
