O’Brien County Authorities Break Up Check Fraud Ring

November 23, 2014

(Hartley)– O’Brien county authorities say 14 people have been taken into custody in a huge check fraud case.

The Sheriff’s Office says authorities were called to United Community Bank in Hartley shortly after 1:00 p.m. Wednesday regarding a group of people cashing fraudulent checks.

Authorities say the names of the 14 people taken into custody aren’t being released as the investigation continues. They’ve been charged with conspiracy to commit theft in the first degree, a class “C” felony. Theft in the first degree is the theft of property exceeding 10-thousand dollars.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, FBI and the Immigration and Naturlization Service are working with local authorities to help identify the subjects and investigate the incident.

Authorities say more information will be released as the investigation continues.
