Drug/Alcohol Treatment Facility Proposed For Lakes Area

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A committee is being formed to explore the possibility of locating a residential treatment facility for alcohol and drug abuse somewhere in the Iowa Great Lakes Area.

The effort is being spearheaded by Phyllis Kempema, who owns Discovery House in Spirit Lake…a center for homeless persons.

Kempema says financing for the start-up of the treatment facility would rely heavily on federal grants and local support from churches and other organizations.

Kempema says there’s an overwhelming need for such a facility locally, siting information from the law enforcement community.

The proposal is already raising concern from some who are concerned over the type of clientelle that would be coming into the area for treatment. But Kempema says many of those folks are already in our community.

Anyone interested in serving on the treatment facility advisory committee should contact Kempema at Discovery House. The group will be meeting again in October. An exact date for the meeting hasn’t been set.
