Voters Approve Bond Issue For New Dickinson Co. Courthouse

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Voters in Dickinson county have approved a 14.9 million dollar bond issue to build a new courthouse in uptown Spirit Lake.

3,233 people voted yes in Tuesday’s election, or slightly more than 65 percent; while 1,683 were opposed, or slightly more than 34 percent. The measure needed 60 percent approval for passage under Iowa law.

The new courthouse will be constructed on the existing site in Spirit Lake. It will include a new Sheriff’s Office and jail, and will bring all county offices under one roof.

This was the fourth time Dickinson county voters have headed to the polls on a courthouse bond issue.

The oldest part of the existing courthouse was constructed in 1891.
