Clay Co. Supervisors Schedule Gambling Vote

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– The Clay County Board of Supervisors have set the date for a special election to decide the fate of riverboat gambling in Spencer…but not without some heated discussion.

At a special meeting this (Tues.) morning, the supervisors accepted a petition calling for a gambling election in Clay county, and to hear from both sides of the issue.

Organizers of the riverboat proposal–the Clay County Gaming Initiative–want the election to be held December 16th to give them time to finish a feasibility study. Opponents requested an election in November, stating there is plenty of time to inform the public of the proposal and in hopes of avoiding the Christmas holiday.

The supervisors spent a considerable amount of time debating the issue. Siting the Thanksgiving holiday and election laws, they eventually voted three-to-two to schedule the election for December 16th. Supervisors Sylvia Schoer and Joel Sorenson cast the dissenting votes.
