(Spirit Lake)– Area fire chiefs are again reminding everyone to use extreme caution if you must do any open burning.
That after Dickinson county fire departments spent the weekend battling numerous grass and field fires.
Officials say several of the grassfires were the result of brush or leaf fires that got out of control and spread to other areas because of the extremely dry conditions.
Officials say some corn fields are do dry that hot exhaust of passing machinery is enough to set them on fire.
The Terril, Spirit Lake, Arnolds Park-Okoboji and Milford Fire Departments were called out to such fires over the weekend. Fortunately no buildings were involved in any of the fires, but officials say there were some close calls.
A ban on all burning remains in effect in Clay county until further notice. No word if such a ban is being sought in Dickinson county.
