(Wallingford)– It took more than 20 firefighters from four area fire departments about nine and-a-half hours Wednesday to extinguish a corn field fire southwest of Wallingford.
Wallingford Fire Chief Jerrod Fischer says his department was called to the scene around 4:00 p.m. and found about 50 round hay bales fully engulfed in flames.
Fischer says the Graettinger, Estherville and Terril Fire Departments were then called to assist with manpower and to haul water. Fischer says the Farmer’s Co-op Elevator also provided a water tanker.
Fischer says the fire, the result of a controlled burn that got out of hand, spread quickly in the breezy conditions.
Fischer thanks the community for bringing food and water to the firefighters and farmers in the area who used their equipment to help battle the fire.
