Cigarette Sparks Okoboji Grass Fire

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– More proof as to just how high the fire danger is in the area.

Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Chief Steve Dulin says a cigarette tossed from a passing vehicle was the cause of a grass fire this (Saturday) morning in the Chalstrom Beach area in Okoboji.

Dulin says firefighters were called to the area just east of McDonalds shortly after 7:00 a.m.

Dulin says firefighters were able to quickly contain and extinguish the blaze before it could reach a residential area.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were on the scene about 20 minutes.

A ban on open burning remains in effect until further notice for Clay and Dickinson counties.

Officials say rain and snow showers that are in the forecast will do little to ease the fire danger.
