Manure Causes Fish Kill Near Sheldon

November 22, 2014

(Sheldon)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says an over-application of manure is the cause of a fish kill last weekend on the Little Floyd River near Sheldon.

Officials say the manure apparently soaked into the ground and moved through a tile line into the river, killing about 2,500 fish.

D-N-R officials say pools of manure could be seen on the farmland. They say a beaver dam may have slowed the manure flow, reducing the impact on the river.

The D-N-R says enforcement action is likely against the owner of the farm where the manure was spread.
