(Jackson, Mn.)– A rural Lakefield, Minnesota woman has been officially charged in the death of a Spirit Lake man.
39-year-old Suzanne McNulty has been charged with one count of second degree felony murder, one count of third degree murder and one count of second degree assault in the shooting death of 34-year-old Ervin Berg of Spirit Lake. McNulty made an initial appearance in Jackson County District Court this (Mon.) morning. Judge Linda Titus set bond at 500-thousand dollars. McNulty’s next court appearance is set for 2:00 p.m. December 1st.
Jackson County Attorney Robert O’Connor says a Grand Jury may be convened to review the case further in the near future and he says additional charges are possible.
Authorities now say the shooting took place sometime late Thursday or early Friday at a residence south of Lakefield. Authorities say McNulty and Berg were acquaintenances, and that Berg was shot while he was standing on the stoop near a door to the residence. McNulty admitted to officers she was holding the gun when it went off, killing Berg.
The owner of the house, Michael Kamrath, was absent at the time of the shooting. McNulty had been staying at the house for a few weeks. McNulty was still there when Kamrath returned Friday morning after being away driving a truck. That’s when Kamrath discovered the body and called authorities.
O’Connor says Kamrath has been cooperative with authorities and that his response is appreciated.
