SL Residents Reminded Of Snow Removal Ordinance

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The first snowfall of the season has pretty much melted away, but chances are there’s more from where that came from. That has the city of Spirit Lake reminding residents of its ordinance requiring the removal of snow and ice from walkways in a timely manner.

Public Works Director Todd Dolphin says residential property owners have 24 hours in which to remove snow and ice from walkways after it’s been deposited. Business owners have 12 hours to get it removed.

Dolphin says those who don’t abide by the ordinance are subject to a municipal infraction. But he says the city generally gives them a notice first. If they still don’t abide, Dolphin says city crews will remove the snow and ice and bill the property owner.

Dolphin says not only will you be abiding by the ordinance by removing the snow and ice, but you could also prevent a lawsuit from someone who slips and falls.
