Surprise Snowstorm Results In School Delays/Cancellations

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– What was supposed to be only one to three inches of snow Tuesday night turned out to be more like five to eight inches.

Five inches of snow fell on the Iowa Great Lakes, but amounts are much heavier just to the south. Spencer reports ten inches.

The snow was preceded by a period of freezing rain and sleet, leaving a layer of ice below it…making for very difficult traveling conditions.

Many schools in northwest Iowa are running two hours late. Some, including Emmetsburg, Estherville-Lincoln Central, Terril, Graettinger, Clay Central Everly and Ruthven-Ayrshire have canceled classes entirely for the day (Wednesday). Iowa Lakes Community College has canceled all day classes today (Wed.).

The National Weather Service says more snow and wind can be expected Thursday.
