(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county supervisors are looking into the possibility of the county contributing to a study into the feasibility of a municipal telecommunications utility.
Supervisor Wayne Northey says he’s been approached by a couple of cities participating in the study wondering if the county would be willing to contribute toward the cost, since some developments in the unincorporated areas would be benefitted by it.
The supervisors took no action on the matter at their meeting earlier this week. They’ve directed Assistant County Attorney Lonnie Saunders to look into the legality of the county contributing to the study.
Under Iowa Code, voters in the cities that are participating had to approve the measure first. Based on that, Saunders told the board he questions if the county has any authority to contribute toward the study.
