(Spencer)– The Spencer city council has approved the purchase of land designated for a future trail and park system.
The council met in special session Monday and approved an agreement with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation to purchase about 220 acres just west of Leach Park. The land is located just south of the Little Sioux River and north of Fourth Street Southwest, lying between Leach Park, Stolley Park and the Stub Johnson Equestrian Area.
Spencer Park and Recreation Director Del Ray Bredehoeft says the land will connect the city’s parks through a trail system.
He says the land will be purchased by the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. The city of Spencer will reimburse the foundation with grants awarded to the city and county conservation board. The 200-thousand dollars in land will not cost the city any tax dollars.
Bredehoeft says realistically, the whole process of connecting the parks will take between three and five years to complete.
The council’s vote to purchase the land was unanimous.
