(Spirit Lake)– Some phony money is making the rounds in the area.
Police say fake 10 and 20-dollar bills were passed Monday at atleast two Spirit Lake businesses. A phony 20-dollar bill had been passed at Wal-Mart and a fake 10-dollar bill showed up in the till at the Dyno’s Convenience Store.
Police Chief Jon Martyr says the fake 20 was of amazingly good quality, but some defects could be found upon closer examination.
Martyr advises businesses to be on the lookout for funny money. He says the bills should be consistent in size with actual currency; that a security strip can be seen on most denominations when the bill is held up to light; and that the paper has some texture to it, along with red and blue fibers that are embedded in it. Martyr says fake bills can also be determined by using a money marking pen. Any business that needs information on how to obtain one should contact the Spirit Lake Police Department. The same thing holds true for anyone who receives phony or suspicious-looking bills.
