Free Radon Testing Available In Dickinson County

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– It’s a cancer-causing, radioactive gas known to be present in many homes locally, but most of us are simply unaware it’s there because it’s odorless and colorless.

It’s called Radon.

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U-S. It comes from the natural radioactive breakdown of uranium in the soil, rock and water.

According to the EPA, Iowa has more homes above the recommended action level than any other state.

David Kolhaase, Dickinson county’s Planning and Zoning Administrator and Sanitarian, is hoping residents take advantage of a special offer. His office is providing Radon test kits free of charge through a grant the county has received. The kits can be picked up during regular office hours.
