Audit Should Cost Less Than First Thought; Date Set For Code Meeting

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The cost of a state audit of Spirit Lake’s financial records shouldn’t cost nearly as much as what was reported at a previous city council meeting.

Councilman Jerry Harbst stated at Tuesday’s meeting that he recently visited with the State Auditor’s Office and was told the cost should be only a few thousand dollars compare to the 20 to 40-thousand mentioned a couple weeks ago. He said the cost will be more if any irregularities are turned up.

On a split vote, the council voted earlier this month to have the city’s finances audited from the last two fiscal years. They took the action after receiving a petition calling for a state audit of just the past fiscal year’s books.

On another matter the council set February 19th as the date for a public informational meeting with contractors and citizens to explain code enforcement. The meeting will be held at 6:30 that evening at a site to be determined.
