(Terril)– Student councils and class representatives from the Terril and Graettinger schools have narrowed the list of possible nicknames for the combined schools to four.
Students in 5th through 11th grades have selected Buccaneers, Gators, Knights and Titans as the four finalists.
Work on selecting a mascot continues as well. Suggestions for that are due to the respective school office by the end of the school day Friday, February 6th.
Student councils and representatives of the two schools will meet again the week of February 16th to narrow the mascot choices for each nick name. Once that’s done, all students in the two districts in grades 5 through 11 will vote on the new mascot.
Original plans to adopt Graettinger’s pirate mascot as the one for the combined schools drew considerable opposition at a public hearing in Terril earlier this winter when the whole-grade sharing proposal was introduced. As a result, the two school boards voted to adopt a mascot and nickname that’s neutral to both schools.
Pending approval by the state, the whole-grade sharing agreement is to go in effect with the upcoming school year.
