(Des Moines)– A longtime Iowa music educator and performer has passed away following a lengthy illness.
Reginald Shive was 73.
Rick Ayres of Spirit Lake, a jazz afficienado, knew Shive personally. Ayres says Shive is best known locally for the “Reggie Shive Jazz Camp” held each summer at Camp Okoboji on West Lake Okoboji. This summer will mark the 24th year for the event.
Carol Ayres is an instrumental music instructor at Iowa Lakes Community College and is a former student of Shive’s. She tells KUOO news Shive also had a great story telling ability and would often reflect on his experiences with other well known jazz musicians and gigs that he had played.
A funeral service for Shive will be held Friday at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City.
