(Spirit Lake)– A state audit of Spirit Lake’s financial records from the last two fiscal years is underway.
Paul Winther of Winter, Stave and Company of Spencer, which has performed the city’s audit the past several years, told the city council Tuesday State Auditors had visited his office last week. Stave said he provided them with information they requested on the audits and that they reviewed various documents.
Stave said it’s his understanding state officials will further review the information, weigh that against whatever the public has brought to them, and decide whether a further probe is needed.
A petition was filed calling for a state audit of the city’s financial records for the last fiscal year. The city council voted four to one in January to extend the audit an additional year–going out over the last two fiscal years.
