Swearing-In Ceremony Held For NW Iowa’s Newest Judge

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– For the first time in the history of Judicial District 3A, a woman is now presiding at the bench.

Nancy Whittenburg of Spencer was sworn in Friday afternoon as the newest District Judge in northwest Iowa’s 3A Judicial District.

The oath was administered by retiring District Judge Frank B. Nelson, who Whittenburg is succeeding.

Nearly 20 of Whittenburg’s fellow judges attended the ceremony. Rosemary Sackett, Chief Judge of the Iowa Court of Appeals, was among those addressing the crowd. She talked about the historical significance of a woman being appointed to the bench for the first time in Judicial District 3A. Sackett hopes it will encourage other members of the Northwest Iowa Women’s Bar to apply for the bench.
