Shore Acres TIF Proposal Moves Closer To Reality

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A proposal to form a tax increment finance district in the Shore Acres area on the north side of Big Spirit Lake is a step closer to reality.

The Dickinson county board of supervisors voted three-to-one Monday to authorize the Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Commission to prepare an urban renewal plan for the area. That’s part of the process in establishing a TIF District.

Supervisor Chair David Gottsche cast the no vote, stating his opposition to the concept of TIF districts.

Representatives of the Shore Acres Association were again on hand at Monday’s meeting. They’re requesting a TIF District be formed to pay for the paving of some streets in the development. County Engineer Dan Eckert presented cost estimates Monday for the proposed project totaling slightly more than 368-thousand dollars. Eckert said his estimate does not include the cost to mitigate some wetlands that would be affected in one segment of the project.

The urban renewal plan will be presented to the supervisors for their consideration once it’s completed. There’s no word on how long that process could take.
